I'm stepping up against cancer!
This year, I’m taking on Relay For Life to raise funds for every person who’s ever heard the words: “you have cancer”.
I have heard these words, not once, not twice, but three times. First when I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia for which I haven't needed to receive any treatment and still haven't received any to this day - in fact my Haematologist says it is 'smouldering'. Second, when I discovered a strange brown mark on my left upper arm which turned out to be a melanoma. And third when in October 2022 I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer which has metastasized to my lungs. I had an operation to remove my thyroid, had radioactive iodine treatment in March, 2023 (which didn't work for me) and have decided, as they can't cure me, to opt for quality of life rather than take a most horrendous drug with the most dreadful side effects as long as my arm. I am still on the 'good side of the grass' and life goes on.
In 2024, more than 150, 000 Australians received the news. Among them are our friends, families and colleagues.
Cancer is a devastating disease for so many. For people living with cancer, their treatments can be long and stressful. For those without solutions, the future can be uncertain. It’s a concern shared by their loved ones.
But with your support, I hope to help as many people impacted by cancer as possible. Together, we can support families when they need it most, empower people to reduce their risk, speak up for communities, and find new ways to better detect and treat cancer.
