Launceston 2026

I'm stepping up against cancer!

This year, I’m taking on Relay For Life to raise funds for every person who’s ever heard the words: “you have cancer”. In 2026, more than 150, 000 Australians will receive the news. Among them are our friends, families and colleagues.

Cancer is a devastating disease for so many. For people living with cancer, their treatments can be long and stressful. For those without solutions, the future can be uncertain. It’s a concern shared by their loved ones.

I have experience on both fronts: first as a carer for my mother who died from pancreatic cancer 13 years ago,  and now as a cancer patient myself, diagnosed with metastatic melanoma 3 years ago. (I still have cancer in my body, but I'm still alive, and as well as I could hope to be, so I guess that makes me a 'survivor', at least for now).

Since my diagnosis, I have received incredible care and support from my friends, colleagues and my awesome medical team here in Launceston (my GP and oncologist are my superheroes). So far, I have not needed to seek support from the Cancer Council, but am really glad that it is here for those who do need the care and resources the Cancer Council provides. So I am happy to work to raise funds for this important service.

With your support, I hope to help as many people affected by cancer as possible. Together, we can support families when they need it most, empower people to reduce their risk, speak up for communities, and find new ways to better detect and treat cancer.

Every step I take is one closer to a cancer free future. But I can’t do it alone! Please donate to my Relay today and together, we can help Cancer Council provide life-changing support services, advocacy, prevention and research across Australia.

Thank you for stepping up. Together we’ll make powerful strides against cancer!

My Updates

One More Sleep to go!

Well, it's the day before The Big Day, and I am very excited that my fundraising has exceeded $1500! As a first-timer at this event, and effectively relying on fundraising through promoting RFL to my Facebook friends and church contacts, (without any additional special fundraising events or activities), I am so chuffed to have been able to contribute this much to the cause.

I'm looking forward to getting out to the Turf Club bright and early tomorrow morning, so I can get organised to participate in the special Carers and Survivors lap that opens the relay.

It's interesting, you know- when I first decided to register for this year's RFL,  I ummed and ahhed a little before deciding to jump into it, as I really felt that after the wonderful care I have received in my own cancer journey here in Launceston, and the fact that my health is so good at the moment, it would be a good opportunity to give back a little to the local cancer community. Even though I haven't needed to avail myself of the services offered by the Cancer Council yet, I am convinced that supporting this organisation is a great way to support my fellow cancer patients and carers through the medical research, support services and activities that the Cancer Council provides here in Tasmania. So, over the past few months, I have definitely drunk the coolaid! :-)

I am posting this picture of a sunflower from our church garden, even though I know the official floral emblem of the Cancer Council is a daffodil,  because it is so bright and pretty, and YELLOW (which is such a happy and hopeful colour). I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I do.

This first-timer is just a tad overwhelmed!

This is my first time participating in Relay for Life, and I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people who have supported my fundraising efforts, so that my total tipped over the $1000 mark today!
So a huge THANKYOU to everyone who has donated so far, and if you haven't yet, there's still time! :-)
One of the unexpected consequences of my growing donation total  was that I earned myself some Relay for Life merch - a bucket hat and a RFL shirt- which I will wear with pride on the big day (you can see it in the photo :-) )
So, thanks again, for your support, and bring on 14 March! :-)
