"I would strongly encourage other diverse communities to join this worthwhile fundraising endeavour to Relay and raise money for cancer research, prevention and support services."
I have been involved with Whitehorse Relay For Life for over 10 years. Relay For Life is a very special occassion, and as President of the Chinese Cancer Society of Victoria (CCSV), it is a way for me to honour our members who have braved the battle against cancer, as well as those who we dearly miss.
I would like to take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to Verna Ho, one of our volunteers who had coordinated CCSV’s team for the yearly Whitehorse Relay For Life event many years. Our involvement with Whitehorse Relay was made more special when Verna led the Society’s choir, where we sang on a couple of occasions at the Candlelight Ceremony. Verna has left her wonderful legacy to remind us to celebrate life and continue our efforts with Relay.
I founded the Chinese Cancer Society in 1996, which is an accredited support group of Cancer Council Victoria. Our Society provides a range of supportive services and cancer education to Chinese people who are affected by cancer. We also work closely with hospital oncology wards and day centres to offer outreach support to Chinese-speaking cancer sufferers. We were very pleased to be awarded Volunteer Group of the Year in December 2011 by Cancer Council Victoria, and being the Society’s volunteer manager, I feel very privileged to be involved with the cancer journey of many of our members. Their strength and determination have inspired me to continue to pursue my passion in supporting cancer sufferers.
CCSV is one of the multicultural groups that has been participating in the Whitehorse Relay For Life event for a number of years. I would strongly encourage other diverse communities to join this worthwhile fundraising endeavour to Relay and raise money for cancer research, prevention and support services.
