We're relaying for our mate, Charlie Grant
We are delighted to support Charlie and his family during these challenging times. Below is a brief overview of Charlie's cancer challenge over the past few years.
"Six years ago, while I was in my prime and my wife and I were considering having a second child through IVF, doctors found something more devastating. The doctors discovered that I was suffering from Mutable Myeloma, a form of blood cancer that attacks the blood plasma that makes up the bone marrow. If not detected or treated, I would have been terminal.
After being diagnosed with cancer, I entered straight into chemotherapy for 9 months to try and kill as many of these cancer cells as possible. This was in preparation for a stem cell/bone marrow transplant using my own stem cells. In the end, I completed the transplant with flying colours with the support of my family and friends. I was also able to return to work and live a somewhat normal life after the transplant.
In 2021, the worst year of our lives, cancer returned. I was unbalanced and had trouble controlling myself so I was put back on chemo, which did not work as well as it had the first time. As it turned out, things weren't working as planned.
Having to undergo more chemo and another stem cell transplant did not work as well this time, and living with cancer was becoming increasingly difficult to deal with. I felt that the right thing for me was to return to work as this was the most effective way for me to manage myself living with cancer. When I joined BHD Storage Solutions, a company that provides industrial and retail racking, I felt a sense of purpose and hope again. As I go through treatment again, BHD has supported me throughout, working on understanding my process and finding a balance with it that works for me. Fortunately, I was able to get my sister's stem cells transplanted because she was a suitable match, which gave me hope to fight. Today, I am midway through my third stem cell/bone marrow transplant.
At present, I'm still recovering in the hospital with no signs of transplant rejection. I feel hopeful, I feel supported, and I feel very grateful. I cannot wait to return home to my family and work colleagues and live a normal life again."
We’re relaying to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, honour those going through a cancer experience and their carers, remember loved ones lost and raise money to help save future lives.
Please help us reach our fundraising goal!
