What happens on the day?
Here's what to expect at Relay. Check with your Relay event coordinator: Jane Murray - 08 8944 1800 | fundraising@cancernt.org.au for special info about the Darwin 2022 Relay:
- Opening Ceremony
- Survivors and Carers walk
- Candlelight Ceremony of Hope
- Closing ceremony
- Entertainment, kids activities, live music and competitions (throughout the day and night)
- Free breakfast
- Keep those team members walking!
You don’t have to stay on the track all night, but we encourage teams to have at least one person on the track at all times to get the most out of your Relay experience.
What to bring to Relay
Be sure to come to Relay prepared! Check the forecast the night before and be prepared for inclement weather. Remember, Relay runs overnight and can be cold.Here’s a list of things that teams should be sure to have handy on the day:
- Tent(s),marquees for your campsite
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm
- Your Relay For Life shirt
- Comfortable walking/running shoes
- Warm clothing (pants, jackets, beanies, gloves, etc.)
- Torch and spare batteries
- Wet weather gear (raincoat, poncho, umbrella, etc.)
- A change of clothes
- Camping gear (Tent, sleeping bag,pillows, blankets, esky, cutlery, cups, water bottle, food and drink.
- Folding chairs and tables
- Plastic sheeting or rubber-backed rug (good on cold or damp ground)
- Campsite decorations and team banners
- Team costumes
- Money and loose change
- Camera to capture those special moments
- Any used or unused raffle books
- Your team!
What not to bring
- Pets (guide dogs and service dogs are welcome)
- Bikes, scooters or roller blades/skates
- Glass
- Fundraising money that you want to bank (please bank any money prior to the event or the next business day after Relay)
- Remember, Relay For Life is a smoke-free event.

What if I require wheelchair access?
Access to onsite parking is restricted. Limited parking permits are available to anyone who requires wheelchair access. Please contact the Cancer Council NT office on 08 8944 1800 to obtain a permit prior to the event.
Can I bring a friend to the event?
Unfortunately due to Covid 19 restrictions, all participants must be registered prior to attending the event. All participants are then checked off upon entry. So please ensure that all your team members have registered for the event.
What if I only want to participate in the Survivors & Carers lap?
The Survivors & Carers lap immediately follows the Opening Ceremony at 6pm. Please register for this lap on the website or at the CCNT Tent on arrival.
Will first aid be available?
Yes. St John Ambulance will be present for the entire event. CCNT also has our resident nursing staff on site.
Will food be available?
Yes. Rotary Darwin will be providing a barbeque dinner from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. A coffee van will also be available from 9pm - midnight and then again from 5am - 8am.
How can I purchase a Relay for Life t-shirt?
T-shirts are not available to be purchased on the website at registration but will be available for purchase at the event.
What else can we expect?
Interactive entertainment and activities for young and old, will be happening throughout the event, as well as teams fundraising and having a great time!
Is there anything else I need to know?
As the grounds are provided by the City of Darwin, there are rules all participants must be made aware of:
- No Smoking
- No Pegs or Stakes into the ground
- No Dogs
- No Glass
- No pouring of water or ice onto the grounds
- Please remove all rubbish from your site

Whether you are a carer, survivor or loved one, whether you choose to walk, jog, or even dance around the track—it’s about you taking part in the way you choose, and having plenty of fun along the way.

Team Rules
- Team captains are responsible for the actions of their team members, family and friends. A responsible adult must accompany people under the age of 18 attending the event.
- One team member must be on the track with the team baton at all times.
- Friends or relatives may accompany a designated walker/runner but their laps are not credited to the team.
- The same rule applies when more than one team member is on the track at the same time.
- Multiple team members walking together on the same lap equates to one lap.
- Each member is responsible for counting their own laps.
- Walkers please do not impede runners lane.
- Teams are requested to mark their site with the name of their team or team banner.
- Participants are responsible for the safety of their belongings. Please leave nothing valuable unattended.
- All youth and school teams must have a supervisor over the age of 25 present for the duration of the event.
