A volunteer’s guide

Volunteers

Volunteers are invaluable in bringing together the Relay For Life events in their community and helping make it such a successful and inspirational day.

  • Volunteer to be a committee member

All Relay For Life events are organised by a volunteer committee – both in the lead up to, and on the day of the event.

Our committees comprise people from a broad cross section of the local community – from business, health, media, markeing, tertiary students, parents, cancer survivors and more.

Committees are supported by Cancer Council to stage their event in line with the International Relay Standards, whilst enabling committees the opportunity to add their own local touch.

Committee members organise all elements of the event, promote Relay, recruit teams to participate, coordinate ceremonies, source entertainment and much more.

  • Helping out on the day

You can volunteer to help out on the day – anything from registering participants to handling the merchandise or even helping transport people around.

  • Why Robyn Chivers volunteers

“The Seymour Relay came about in a very short space of time. The amazing committee pulled together and really got the community involved. A major highlight was the survivors and careers walk. There were about 150 participants - the spirit at the relay just can’t be described accurately enough in words. It was great to have a team and strong representation from the Army to join with the Seymour community. At the end of the relay, everyone joined hands in a circle around the track. It bought a tear to my eye and with the thought that ‘yes, we pulled this off’.”

  • Why Tanya Facer volunteers

My first Relay was with my mum in a team from St George when Toowoomba had its first relay, it was great fun and we had a ball together – times that I will treasure. Probably the most significant part of that Relay for me was the Candle Ceremony and continues to be my favourite part. When she passed away nearly 3 years ago I joined the Branch in Dalby. When they approached me to be part of the committee for Dalby I was really keen and the rest is history – two Relays later and now I would love to be President next year if they will have me.

Tanya Facer Dalby Relay For Life committee member since 2007 and participant since 2006
